Injection of botulinum toxin is a cosmetic treatment aimed at reducing wrinkles, especially those of expression, which are created in the area of the forehead, in the glabella (area between the two eyebrows) and periocular, caused by the repeated contraction of the mimic muscles. It is also possible to modify negative facial expressions such as sadness or angry face by attenuating the most responsible muscular component of the same. Surface injection can also improve the skin texture by reducing micro-wrinkles.
Mechanism of action
Injected botulinum toxin has the power to slow down or temporarily block the transmission of the nerve impulse. In this way, the muscular contractions that cause wrinkles and imperfections of the face are modified.
Who can do this treatment
The treatment with botulinum toxin can be performed on people ageing between 18 and 65 years and is used in medicine not only for aesthetic purposes, but also, as occurs in more than 70 countries in the world, for the treatment of multiple pathologies such as strabismus, muscle spasms, mandibular joint disorders etc. The rare side effects may be headache, temporary ptosis of the eyelids, rarely nausea.
When it acts
The result is not immediate, but starts to be visible from 3-4 days after treatment. The duration varies from 4 to 6 months, but in order to obtain an optimal result, the treatment must be repeated every 4 months for the first 2 cycles.
